Lord, Grant
me Wisdom
Wisdom isn’t learned from books or lectures, but from life, especially
from one’s failings and yearnings. Smarts help, but aren’t
the key. Some of the wisest people I know aren’t highly trained
or intellectual. The key seems to be letting life in and learning from
it. Wisdom arises from engagement with people in all of their flaws,
from an honest assessment of oneself, from curiosity about the world,
and from humility on the edge of chaos.
I believe
God is eager to confer wisdom. The question is whether we are eager
to receive it. Wisdom yields
little wealth or power. But by arising
from sadness and struggle, wisdom enables us to live boldly in the
world as it is. That, in turn, leads to joy.
