For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy.
—Psalm 92:4

We can never exhaust the possibilities for awe. A litter of fuzzy puppies, a rose bush in full bloom, a cool breeze on a humid day, a sunset that brushes the sky with bold colors, a tree-lined park in summer, the soft fall of fresh snow, the horizon encircling us on a mountaintop, fog sweeping across a coastal valley, the quick dart of a hummingbird. The images are limitless because the creative hand of the Holy One is limitless.

When awe is unleashed within us, we feel a light happiness descending on us. Our breath is caught in our throat, and warm tears may drop down our cheeks. We may be speechless. We may halt all activity as if paralyzed in mid-air. But, we are strangely content and finally sure that what really matters in life is the work of God in our midst.

When your heart is heavy, your body tense, your mind tangled, take a short break and take yourself anywhere where you will see God’s hand at work. Open yourself to the possibility of awe, and awe will transform your heart, your body, your mind, your soul.

O God, don’t let me miss the miraculous moments of awe that are the signs of your artistic flourish on this world.
