For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as
children of light.
—Ephesians 5:8
Rather than empty space waiting to be filled, we feel walled in by stones that shut out the light. Stones that cause us, from time to time, to stumble. Stones that are obstacles to the free movement of life and wholeness. Often we try to avoid the stones or they simply become so familiar to us that we no longer notice them.
Their
power over the health of our soul, however, is subtle and stealthy. Over
time, we are surprised to find shadows surrounding our soul. We
find that blame and shame deepen our darkness. We begin to define
ourselves by what keeps us bound rather than by the freedom that beckons us.
God's desire for us is always that we walk in the light—that we become
light. When we become light, the grace of God parts the shadows
and brightness, the color of sun, pours through us unimpeded and
unrestricted.
When the stones in our soul seem solid and immovable, we have only to quiet ourselves and ask the light of heaven to descend. In the stillness, we just may notice our soul has been cleared and the expanse of heaven has entered in.
Gracious God, when my self-understanding has shrunk to nothing but shame, clear a path in my soul so that I may walk in the light.
