On this day the Lord has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
—Psalm 118:24
On the other hand, if we look at life through the eyes of our heart and spirit, we will see meaning and purpose; we will see the hand of the Lord in everyday life.
Who is to say what is reality? Is it only what
we can see, touch and feel, or is it what is beyond those senses? Could it
be that
reality
lies in the
spiritual dimension, where we
recognize the presence of the Divine with us?
The psalm
above says that there is a loving God who rules the universe, a Creator who
brought us into being and who adores us. It says that God loves us so much that
he acts in our lives, he acts in the world. He is a real presence in our world.
The Psalmist says that God is the ultimate reality.
Although this
psalm is part of the Old Testament, there is a Christian interpretation that
points to yet another reality. In the psalm, we understand that God has
"acted"; that
is, God has done something that has changed the realities of everyday
life.
That act is the birth into the world of God Himself as a
defenseless, innocent baby. The baby Jesus came as God's human/divine presence
in our world in order to reassure us of God's love for us.
He came to powerfully present God's value system of good over evil. He came to give us hope in good and goodness and God, so that we could have faith that goodness and good and God are with us, with you and me, today and every day.
"Let us rejoice and be glad in it!"
Lord, thank you for your presence with us and for the quiet joy you bring to our lives. Amen.
