Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
—John 11:40

We go through the rigors of our day with little expectation of seeing the glory of God.  It's been a good day when we feel that we've completed most of the items on our "to-do" list,had a good meal,spent a little time with  family, and avoided trouble or difficulty. 

There are times, of course, when we are astonished by something that we had not anticipated. Usually, however, our days are rather routine, and when we have an unexpected moment of awe, we figure that it is an aberrant occurrence—certainly not something to trust will happen on a regular basis, not something to look forward to, not something that is a natural part of our human life.

It isn’t that the glory of God is haphazard or unpredictable. It isn’t that the glory of God is only available to the morally and spiritually superior among us. It isn’t that the glory of God is a carrot that the Holy One trots out before us in order to get our attention.

The glory of God is always present, always real, always available for those who believe. There are not special circumstances that need to be created in order for the glory of God to be revealed.  All that is needed are eyes that are clear of the dull habit of monotony. 

Imagine what eyes of curiosity and a heart of faith might see. Most certainly, wonderment would be more the rule than the exception.

Gracious God, halt my skepticism, and open my eyes to faith.
