Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes...Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.”
—John 9: 14
When we believe we have received divine truth, our feelings are bruised when someone acts in opposition to that truth. We all have some divine truth that we’ve absorbed during the course of our life. It may be an official religious teaching or it may be a credo that we’ve adopted for ourselves.
Life, with all its variegated patterns, can leave our souls unsettled with each change to a new environment. In an effort to regain equanimity, we plant our feet into those truths that lie in our heart and close to our lips. It may not be that the truths themselves are so important to us. Rather, they are what point us to our yearning for stability.
Yet, even when stability becomes our companion, she's a fair-weather friend. It won't be long before she scoots off so change can take her place for awhile. When she suddenly disappears, we cling again to those truths as if they were our bloodline to survival.
Fresh truth, however, is always being revealed. How much more balanced we would be if we moved into new truth with the ease of a dancer sliding across the dance floor. There's really no need to fear that new truth will somehow lead us down a path of destruction. We'll find we just get a bigger view of heaven.
Gracious God, help me let go when holding on keeps my soul from soaring.
