I am the bread that came down from heaven.
—John 7:7
This season is bright with possibilities and new choices. It is said that our life is the sum total of all our choices. But it is also said that “today is the first day of the rest of our life.” So whether your choices have been good ones, bad ones or, as it is with most of us, some of each, today is the time for new beginnings.
Jesus is the bread that feeds us for a new start. The most important resource for a bright and hopeful outlook is the spirit within. Jesus brings that spirit to us. He said that He is the bread that came down from heaven. And indeed He is.
That bread feeds us like no other. Spiritually nutritious and centering, His presence in the life of a Christian is like Premium gasoline in the engine of a car. The best energy for living the fullness of life can only come from our Creator who made us. Having His Son within us, walking with us and feeding us gives us the wholeness that is the source of true life.
C. S. Lewis was one of the greatest theologians who ever lived. He was a British layman who, as a young adult, professed atheism. Then he “fell in love” with God in Jesus Christ, and became a new and different human being. His faith poured out into book after book, major among them Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters and The Great Divorce. According to Time magazine, his books have converted more people to Christianity than any books other than the Bible.
As with Lewis, we receive something divine when we receive Him who is “the bread who came down from heaven.” When we have that bread we have everything.
Lord, open my mind and my heart to Him who seeks to feed me. Amen.
