We look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen as temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
—2 Corinthians 4:18
Truthfully speaking, we are not a “believe-in-what-we-cannot-see” world. As humans we have great intentions of mastering a positive attitude even when we are so often surrounded by negativity. For the most part, we perform fairly well despite the spiritual and political negativity we encounter on a daily basis.
In a chaotic world, however, it’s always easier to focus on what can be seen rather than on what cannot be seen. This leaves us fairly handicapped when it comes to the spiritual.
Because it can be exhausting to chisel through our polarized views on faith and religion, we all need encouragement and guidance when we are seeking the Kingdom of God, which seems so cleverly hidden. God’s love and promise to us is known internally—in the corners of our lives, where what is important remains unseen.
Yet we are often tempted to believe in the continual messages we receive from the media, from politicians, from Wall Street to put our trust in the promises that start out so real and often end up disappointing and betraying us.
Then, when the bottom falls out and the promises fall flat, we realize that we can’t really believe just because we see. The love of God, on the other hand, never deceives or disappoints us. God's promises can be trusted. They are good for all of life—right into eternity.
Gracious God, give us strength to believe when we are in doubt and when our faith is wavering.
